Acute Medicine & Respirology Nurse
/ Research Assistant

Hello

My current nursing practice is in acute medicine/respirology at the St. Catharines hospital. I very much enjoy the fast paced environment of the floor, as well as being able to experience new situations everyday. For only working on the floor for 1.5 years I have learned so many crucial and beneficial skills that I will carry with me throughout my nursing career. Seeing different types/severity of patients each day is a great way to fine tune your skills early into your career.

My Story

My experience being involved as a research assistant was extremely positive. My goal at the time was to put myself in new and exciting experiences and when I received this email I took an opportunity and loved every moment of it. To be a part of a study, to improve a program that is so important was a true honour. Working alongside Dr. Odreman and the other assistants was such a fulfilling experience and I have zero regrets. Working as a research assistant is a great way to get started in bettering your education and being able to be a part of a welcome change in how future students will experience the program. You will gain valuable skills that will be foundational to improving your future education, as well as create lasting connections.

My current goal is to achieve my BScN and take additional wound care courses. Working in acute medicine you see many different types of wounds and this has become an interest of mine that I would like to better educate myself on and become a wound care nurse. I have also considered eventually getting my masters of education, as working with students both in the research study as well as precepting consolidating students on the unit has evoked a passion for teaching that I would like to explore in the future.

I think anyone that is considering becoming a research assistant should apply! It is a great way to experience an educational opportunity not offered to many college students. It will allow you to reflect on your nursing journey thus far and imagine new ways to better the program for years to come. Personally, I have created lasting friendships and developed new passions that I never thought I would discover. I am truly lucky and honoured to have been a part of this opportunity, and I definitely think anyone that is considering it should do it!
