Marissa Riolino, RPN, BScN (candidate)
ER Nurse | Research Assistant
Hello
I'm working as an emergency department nurse at Welland, dealing with various Populations and needs and constantly collaborating with different disciplines to ensure the best patient outcomes. I enjoy the fast-paced and dynamic emergency department environment and the chances I get with every shift to grow and refine my nursing skills.
My Story
My time as a research assistant was extremely valuable. It allowed me to contribute positively to my previous academic environment while gaining important insight into psychological safety, pedagogy, and diverse teaching methods. These experiences also enhanced my understanding of how learners absorb and apply information. I also had the opportunity to improve my critical thinking skills for my nursing practice and recognize the importance of psychological safety in a professional environment for myself and future nurses. In addition, I met people who are some of my best friends. I am grateful for the experience and opportunity to work with such wonderful and insightful individuals.

I am enrolled in the RPN-RN bridging program through Nipissing. So, in the immediate future, I hope to Increase my scope and obtain my BScN. From there, I could see myself pursuing becoming a nurse practitioner. What’s great about nursing is that you have many options, which only increase with time and experience. If there is an opportunity for me to reprise my role as a research assistant, I would be very open to that. I love to expand my understanding of how things may happen, what factors impact specific outcomes, and how that can be changed or improved.

I advise future nursing students interested in becoming research assistants not to be afraid to challenge their comfort zone. Some valuable traits and skills are utilized both in a research capacity and in nursing. The experience of being a research assistant will allow you to grow in skills such as reflexivity, adaptability, and critical thinking, which are essential to nursing practice. Being a research assistant will allow you to hone those skills meaningfully, preparing you for the rest of your nursing career!
